On March 25, 1933, shortly after Adolf Hitler took power, SA paramilitaries and local police attacked the Jewish community of Creglingen, a small town in southern Germany.
During a synagogue service, approximately 16 Jewish men were arrested, dragged to the Old Town Hall, and brutally beaten for hours.
Two men died as a result:
Hermann Stern, a respected community leader, died the same day from his injuries.
Arnold Rosenfeld died about a week later in hospital.
The violence occurred in public, with town officials present, and no one intervened. The attack is considered one of the earliest deadly anti-Jewish pogroms of the Nazi era, preceding Kristallnacht by more than five years.
